TOO BRILLIANT
Gascony Defeats Reremoana ■ Reremtoana is still the great old weight carrier, but he has lost that edge of brilliancy. THIS was very amply illustrated-,at 1 Awapuni when he went down m the Palmerston North "Stakes to Gascony. It was expected that one of the two-year-olds engaged would make the initial pace, but it was left to Gascony to carry on m front. Reremoana was just m behind — m racing parlance he had the drop— but once on to the turn Reremoana could not go with his younger rival. Gascony put a break on here and that break made the difference between winning and losing. It was quite a handy lead that Gascony had as they turned for home and then Reremoana settled down to that sweeping stride of his. IJe gained inch by inch, but the pbst found him a neck to the bad. , . I Gascony is going to he a mighty con- i tender m the shorter weight-for-age 7 races from now ori. * i He looks the part and what is more fits it. A regular gentleman he is now. As for Rerehioana it Would be a game man who would- say. he will not win a good handicap before it comes time for him to. retire, b He has lost some of his brilliancy, but not a. whit of his solidness.
