Comes Climbs
QUITE a lot of people m Nelson, Wellington and Auckland, amongst other places were properly pleased at a recent cryptic announcement m the press which read: ~" G. H7 Comes, assistant-sub-collector of Customs, Auckland, to be subcollector, Wellington. In fact, not a. few. threw Stetsons m the air; or hied themselves post-haste to the telegraph office Avhilst others ejaculated with much fervor: "Good old George"! Now George is not old. He iff well on the sunny side of half a century and looks as fit as when he stripped for the Nelson Rugby team many harvest moons ago. His cruiser build, broad business-like shoulders, and the humorous twinkle m his eye are still prominently m evidence. . Some people have as- much love for a Customs officer as they have for a dentist m action or the income-tax department, but G.H.C. does his bit towards augmenting the public revenue without incurring' the glance which freezes! For some time he was an inspector m the Auckland district and became a familiar figure m country breweries where he checked up specific gravities; the ■ consumption of raw materials against "the resultant amber fluid ; and the strength of the "kick" thereof. Good sort of a job? Yes. And a good fellow for it!
