IN the early days of New Zealand's political history when those old war horses, Balance and Seddon held the'- Liberal .reins of Government, New Plymouth had as its representative m the affairs of state one E. ! M. Smith. Nowadays, when the crest of the political wave is again taking on its olden hue, a member of the same Smith tribe comes 'into the limelight under the banner of the last of the Liberal leaders, Sir Joseph "Ward; Like father, like son, and maybe that is why Sydney George Smith is following m his ; father's footsteps m political thought. S.G.S. was born m New Plymoum,, back m -79 and it is from this hub of the cowrcocky's paradise that he is going to make his mark. Twenty years service m various branches of the Railways Service have not been wasted years and as a member of the executive of the Amalgamated Sqciety of Railway Servants, he has done much to ameliorate the lot of those with whom he came into daily contact. • . . Smith captured the Taranaki seat m Parliament at a by.- election m 1918, but was defeated during the 1925 debacle. Nothing daunted, he has come up smiling again. The tenacity with which he sticks to his guns has been rewarded, for, during the last short session of the House, he was elected to the position of Chairman of Committees. Heni tackle the job with his usual thoroughness, too,, and if qualifications count for . anything, Sydney G. Smith carries a full portfolio of them.
