The Big Noise
TO refer to a man as being the "Big Noise" is to make use of a vulgar pseudonym to convey prominence and popularity m the public eye. For this reason Alfred' Lees, of Ashburton, is entitled to such honor; thougn .Ashburtomans mijjnt at first misinterpret the meaning on account of Alf being the big-drumm.er m the local band! It is over two decades since A.L. lobbed into the wee wheat town and said to himself: "Thjs'll do me." Ashburton must have returned the compliment, for Lees has kept up his end m business ever since, and through a lively interest m. local affairs is one of tne best-known of tiie nnuiy East Streeters, whu may be seen any day basking m the morning sunshine before the rush of business. Alf. has wielded the padded sticks for many, many years, and must be the oldest member of the personnel which makes up the . able performances of the Ashburton Silver Band.
