Pioneer Bill
THERE is a lot of satisfaction to a 1 man m the knowledge that he was the pioneer m his particular calling m life. In this category Bill Patrick presides over nig well-named "Oasis" supplying the needs of the Canterbury motorists when their tanks run dry. ' ■ Bill had the honor of pioneering the kerbside pump station business m New Zealand, being the first knight of the bowser to establish a station when the country switched over from case to bulk, supply. But to the majority of people, Bill's name is associated with cricket averages, centuries and the like, and it will remain evergreen for many years. For twenty years Bill helped to place Canterbury m the forefront of the cricketing provinces, while over a period 'of thirteen years he was a regular representative of the Dominion and captained the side which toured Australia and lost only one game. When the pressure of business eases sufficiently to allow him a few idle moments, Bill still keeps an interest m the game, and a week or so ago reminded the Christchurch bowlers that Bill Patrick was still a power m the cricketing firmament by knocking up ninety like a mature tradesman. .
