THE AUCKLAND CUP

A Chat About The Candidates And Recent Form W£E BEARS OPEN APPEARANCE • , (By "The Toff"). Interest is now being taken m the prospects for the Auckland Trotting Cup, which is to be run shortly. All but three of the candidates ran m the New Zealand Cup last month.

OF the sixteen candidates, eleven are from the south, two from Auck- . land, and one each from Gisborne, Hawera and Palmerston North. The Auckland Trotting Cup, is a. 4.27 class with similar qualifying conditions as the premier light-harness event of the year, the N.Z. Cup. In the New Zealand Trotting Cup the limit was 48 yards. In the Auckland event it is 72 .yards. This is accounted for by taking Great Bingen back 12 yards for running second m the New Zealand Trotting Cup, his mark now being assessed at 4.21. Ahuriri, which finished third m the big contest at Addington, has also been tightened to 4.22. He was on 4.23 m the New, Zealand Trotting' Cup. s

Peter Bingen, which won at Addinglon going 4.22 1/5, has been correctly handicapped on 4.23 and for running second to Taiaro m the Christchurch Handicap, Jack Potta has been penalized six yards, his mark now being 4.23. In last' year's Auckland Gup,- Jack Potts and Ahuriri were on a 4.25 mark, from which a stirring- finish between the pair ended m Ahuriri beating Jack Potts by a head. This year, Jack Potts is entitled to 12 yards; from Ahuriri and he should beat Bryce's horse. Both Jack Potts and Ahuriri will beat Jewel Pointer, but can they stay m front, of Great Bingen? On their running m the New Zealand Trotting Cup, it looked as though Ahuriri and Great Bingen ] would have been first and second had they enjoyed a favorable^ passage going down the back stretch the last time.' I The task of Prince Pointer, which is on 36 yards behind, is not so great as that of. Jack Potts and Ahuriri and, being a quick beginner, he may succeed m running into a good place before the race has been m progress two furlongs. • While the back- markers are busy fighting for positions Albert Hendricksen will have Cardinal Logan doing his work next to the inside fence. There is Terence Dillon, which was not ready for the big event at Addlng Iton. Dressed Jn his racing togs Terence Dillon will be troublesome. Just at present Cardinal Logan, Terence Dillon, Jack Potts and Prince Pointer appear worth nibbling at.
