ONE TO THE SHREW
Handicapper Routed In Mark Memorial Cup DISADVANTAGE OF A "LET-UP" (From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative). The Shrew won the Mark Memorial Cup at Claudelands, but it was a close go m the long run. " .
NELSON TASKER did all but get there after losing ground at the start and then acting as pacemaker all the way. . They were not allowed to loaf, for The Shrew had to step to the tune of 4.29 1/5 from 4.33, Nelson Tasker going 4.32 2/5 off 4.36. The result might have been different if Nelson Tasker had been held m, for he is not a genuine stayer. It was only after driving a waiting race and coming from eighth position gradually m the last mile that saw Driver Head and his charge left with Just a little bit more m hand to sneak past the post a long neck to the good. On handicaps The Shrew was well m, and such proved the case, and the
result will give the adjusters something to ponder over. Letting some competitors up is not going to do the game a great deal of. good. .-,;•• The third place-getter, Lady Dunmore, was nicely treated, too, and came fast at the finish. She should be benefited by the run. There *• was nothing outstanding 1 amongst the others, but The Abbey was m trouble twice, ,otherwise he would at least have been close up. The big disappointment was Daytime* and although always m the picture he faded out at the business end. Still, his turn should come m a twomile event, but probably he will be more suited if the pace is not too hot.
