WANGANUI WHISPERS
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Wanganui Rep.)
Pedestal, the half-brother (by Thespian) to Commendation, has been thrown out of work and sent to Koutiinui for a spoil. # • * Pedestal has hot yet raced, though he was taken to Auckland m the spring for educational purposes. He fined i down nicely on the trip, but had not done too well since then and it was, therefore, decided to give him a spell. It will probably be next spring before he races. • • • Ceremony had his first start m the Welcome Stakes at EHerslie, when he ran unplaced. The brother to livsander has improved since then, and won very easily after getting a bit the best of the start at Feilding on Saturday. «; * * Ceremony is not a robust looking youngster, but ha can gallop, and if W. Rayner can keep him going all right tha son of Absurd- Pennon is likely to do good service for G. M. Currie. .*• ' • Lysander is getting back some of his old time brilliancy and ran two good races ai Feilding. Pie could not get near Paganelll the first day m the Stakes, but he made a big fight of it with The Raider m the open sprint on Saturday. He will be all the better for the racing and . should be hard to beat at EHerslie. * * • Eplsodd has goriei out 'for a Spell, and the chances are she will never race again. • • • Teucer is a dangerous customer m a rjlce. He runs down his hurdles badly, and it appeared as if he were the cause of Pinna falling the first day at Feilding. •■ # * Star Area is probably better now than ever, and the big son of Acre will only have to keep right to win some money before the holidays are over. He will be racing at Woodville. - # ♦ # Three Great Northern Derby candidates were seen out at Feilding — Tcheka, The Warden, and Metellus. Of the three, Tcheka made the best showing, and the Night Raid gelding might go well m the classic event.
The Warden is ca.pd.ble of fconsiderable improvement. He ran third each day, and with any luck would have done better each start. He will be better suited over the longer distance, and mftght surprise at EHerslie. # * * F. Tilly expected Metellus to run better than he did at Feilding, where his form did not, suggest that he has any chance m the Derby at EHerslie. # • • Grand Lupin, too, is good enough to win m any company, but the Waverley owned horse does not race up to appearances. # # • ■ Acred ran two good races at Feilding for B. T. Bennett, getting third each start. He looks like doing better during the holidays. # * * A gallop or two has improved Cobham, and the English-bred gelding now looks like making good. "Tommy's" friends will be pleased if ne has a win or two. # # • A race which should suit Cobham is the Douro Cup, but it takes a good hack to win that event. # * * Praeda was fancied by her connections for the Nursery Handicap at Feilding, but the Night Raid filly did not show the pace expected of her. # • * The "Warden is a slow beginner, and this tells against him m six furlong events. The Derby distance will be more to his liking. # # • C. Gordon has a half-brother by Acre to Archon m. work with a view to making a hurdler of him. This gelding is a natural jumper, and should do well at the game. # * * Mask is m great fettle. If 'he .were not to run m the Cup at EllersHe he would look certain to win a race at the meeting. Trying to run two miles might spoil him for the shorter distance events. At the same time the Limond gelding might surprise those who reckon he won't run out two miles.
