Fred Jones Wins % At Washdyfe (From "N.Z. Truth's " Special Christchurcli Representative.) It was only a few weeks ago that Fred Jones figured he was the stiff est man south. of the' equator.

TTOWEVER, it's a long shower that ' 11 never stops, and Fred broke his trot of bad luck at Washdyke, where he led m three winners. First Sight showed just what improvement he had made by winning the Teschemaker Handicap on the first day like a champion. He conceded weight to Battle Colours and stood him up a big start from the turn for home; but when . Bert Ellis moved on him it was all over bar filling them up. ' The .Australian two-year-old Belcaire, by Treclare, -which Fred gave 110 guineas for af the Sydney sales, was handed on to H. A. Knight when Fred came, home, and. on the second day at Rlccarton 'she showed signs* of Improvement. •

In the Spring Stakes at Washdyke she cleared out from the rest of the field over the last furlong, and won easing up by two lengths. • Things came undone a bit when Toawai, a brother to Arikiwai, failed to reach 'a winning position m the Maiden Plate, but on the Second day he came .away from the field m the Trial Handicap, and wore Uproar down to win by a neclt. With those three horses now V reaching the top of their form, Fred has, the foundation of a good team for th« holiday racing m the North Inland. The weights allotted First Sight at Auckland and Manawatu will be the deciding fafctor as to which centre he will visit at Christmas week.'
