A POPULAR figure m the sportingarenas of Christchurch ia Bob Beattie, who this season has been elected, to the presidency of the Can-terbury-Athletic Centre. This honor is a generous tribute to the man -who for some years had been the silent force behind the athletic throne m Canterbury. : . Bob was a product of the West Christchuich District High School, and "Canty. Col." and has -grown up m the happy .environment of the Garden City. He was attracted to law early m life, and joined tne business uuuei 1 his father. He-was a sound footbahe. 1 m his day, but a peppering -of lead while a, member of • Liverpool's Rifle Brigade, tCinikiated his active participation m sport.. ■ : A quiet, unassuming type, Bob has the happy knack, of getting things done, and inspires his colleagues with his tolerant, but nevertheless determined manner m pushing thing's along. ,; Canterburians look forward hopefully to a successful athletic season under the guidance of , Bob Beattie.
