Spring Control Devices Overheat
MUCH., trouble .is experienced ,." by ***• overheating of the spring control device which has to .operate; too near the exhaust Pipe* On; most cars this is the right rear ..control. ; . ;
Heat thins out: the fluid, if the device is hydraulic, and' encourages' grease to work out on the: friction surfaces, : if of the mechanical order.- In. either case the device is prevented from working to highest efficiency and the motofist notices it m the way his /car rides. A convenient remedy is ' to. wrap the exhaust pipe with asbestos. In : some instances it Is also well to cover .the muffler, since heat. may. blow back from this to the spring control.
After making this provision against overheating the device, have the instrument taken off and serviced, if it is of the mechanical, or frictional type. The hydraulic type will take care of itself when the excessive . heat is removed.
