BIG BERTHA
Massive Hack With Possibilities
(From "N.Z; Truth's 1 ' Auckland Rep.) That you never know what is likely to be met m Maiden events was again instanced m connection . with that class on opening day of the Dargaville fixture. THE Maiden Plate there was cuY up •* ' into two divisions, one of which was gathered m by Ferndeh/a Redfern gelding which did show some pace previously m public. '. However, there was no line regarding the other, winner, Big Bertha, as massive a "daughter of Romeo as her name indicates. - :- ; v She was making her first public appearance! and having been trained at Pukekohe away from the eyes, of the touts she boasted very few' supporters. Her connections hardly relished the fact that anyone else but themselves scared m the coup. They, would have preferred the lot. In her case it threatened to be a great battle for the ' honors until the final furlong, when the massive "Bertha" just towered . over the rest and ; put two lengths between herself and the next best before the post was reached^ r There was no' occasion to make the gap greater, otherwise Big Bertha may have done' so . ' She ran the six m 1.15 4/5, and -will probably do better at some future date if size has anything' to do with it. "Truth" does not know how she will shape on a small track. She may. get m her own road, but just gaze hopefully on "Bertha" while she is groping heir way through the hack class. . • LJOCIC trouble brought about Chelon%'s 11 withdrawal from the Stewards. It was nothing serious, . but his owner would not take tile chance of running him.- . . ■■■• . .:•■;•■■ ■'■ .--■ ■ •'■ -.■'.' "' .
