A Burglary Scuffle Down South
(From "NZ. Truth's" Dunedin Rep.) ' Not to b© totally outdone by Auckland's dramatic burglar hofd-up, Dunedin recently staged a thrilling chase m the locahty of Cargill Road. AS a result, Victor Fanning Fraser *V Kett, a middle-aged married man, was brought before Magistrate Bartholomew at the city police court and charged with .having broken and entered into the business-residential premises of Michael Percy Kearney, marine dealer. Accused, who pleaded not guilty, was represented by Lawyer White. : , x , ■„■ . Kearney's evidence was to the effect that on the evening of October 10, he and his brother, who bach together on the premises at Cargill Road, had completed their evening meal m the kitchen when witness noticed a light shining into the passage from beneath the bedroom door.
On investigating, Kearney saw a mail leaving by the front gate. He gave chase and eventually caught the man. In an ensuing scuffle, witness was pulled over some pickets and had to release his hold on his quarry. .
When caught the second .time, Kett, according to Kearney, asked to be given, a "breather," and explained that he had been brought to the house by a. woman who said she had a room there. - -
The bedroom window was always closed, said; witness, and the front door locked/ Prior to having tea he had left a pair of trousers containing an empty money-bag lying on the bed. Oh examining the room after the excitement it was found that the garment was on the floor and the bag lying some feet away.. The defence was reserved and accused committed for trial, bail ' being granted. .
