ALL THE BEST STRAIGHT TROTTERS
See How They Run In The Dominion Handicap Trot— A Popular Event 1 • \ . ■ ___ - .■ , . ....... ■•■*■ ■ •■ . (By "The Toff.") " EL very punter loves a good horse and there are plenty -'.of gpod ones m the Dominion trotr-the fastest event for unhoppled ones on the Metropolitan club's programme. It should be a spectacular and keen contest.
TUST take a look through those which J stand their ' ground. ' Are they not class? With the exception of Peterwah, which is m the big Trotting Cup, Ull'the best in -commission will step round Addington. If they all stay, down what a race it will be, . ' This is the first season that the Dominion . Handicap has been, restricted to the best unhoppled trotters m Australasia. The limit, 4.34. is the tightest for horses of the trotting gait m New Zealand, and though only eight are likely to go to the post, 'the field is sufficiently big to bring the crowd to its feet.
It is unfortunate that Trampfast injured a heel two weeks ago, and could not fulfil his Oamaru engagement.', At time of writing. his owner did not expect his gelding to recover m time to race at Addington. Of the remaining eight, Native Star is a hot favorite. She won five races' last season, her best performance being m the Summer Handicap at the New Zealand. Metropolitan Trotting Club's Easter fixtui-e, where she led home a field m 4.3d 2-5.
She won, with comparative ease
with broken gear dangling round, her legs, her pilot sitting well forward m the jogging cart, , to prevent it from going up m the air.
Such an, outstanding effort cannot readily be forgotten, and off 4.30 m a 4.34 class, Native Star should gain the honors.
On the occasion referred to, Native Star was followed home by Elzear, who trotted the two miles m 4.30 4-5. In that event Elzear began from the same mark as Native Star, but on Tuesday, Native Star is set to give Elzear 12yds. On their last" meeting the former-.. wi1l do it and do it fairly easily. At Addington,. m August, Sister
Beatrice ran second to Kempton m the Stewards' Handicap after stepping the two miles m 4.28 4-5. ■ i

promise to offer stiff resistance to Native Star it will be Sister Beatrice.
Fresh from Auckland are the" deeds of Young Blake which will •begin/from 48yds. behind. On the last day of the recent spring meeting m the northern capital, Young-Blake registered 4.28 3-5, so from a 4.30 mark m the Dominion Handicap he will go a good race.
At Auckland he was inclined to ease up over the last fifty yards, so it lpoks as if the whip will have to be brought into use. to persuade him, to stick to his work to the bitter end. ■■'■' .
Placed on sixty yards behind . are Peter Swift and Moneyspider. Providr ed the sting is out. of the ground, Peter Swift will add: interest to the proceedings, and, if - v what "Spotty" Bryce states'about Moneyspider is true, then Moneyspider will be home and dried.
Perhaps "Scotty" is underestimating Native Star. Moneyspider has proved that he is a great trotter and a wonderful
finisher. His. last mile of 2.10 m a work-out over two miles bears out that contention;
But there are other trotters m the race that can do that and Moneyspider will have a problem m conceding up-: wards of GO yards and beating this select field. .. • , .
When die tapes are released it will be found that Young Blake and, Sister Beatrice are fast beginners. The slowest beginner of the field is Native Star, and no doubt the drivers of. her opponents will ex,pect to get her bustled over the first half-mile.
They will not do that, but she. is certain to lose a bit of ground over the first part of the journey.
Entering on 1 the- last mile is where Native Star will come into hei\ own, and when the back-stretch is' approached the last time, she .will pro- : ceed to collect the big end of the prize. So, if the tra,ck is dry, the judge's placings m the biggest trotters' race at the carnival promises to be thus:
NATIVE STAR, SISTER BEATRICE,
