Attractive Minor Races At North Otago Meeting
: '•" (By "The Toff.") .;'«;' The new course at Oamaru was officially opened by E. P. Lee, M.P., before a huge attendance. It is a grass course, nine furlongs round and is m splendid order. The stands and lawn accommodation are spacious and well arranged.
W;T. LOWE, driver of the first *.'. winner, was presented with a gold-mounted Avhip m honor of the occasion.
New Metford made a break soon after the start of the Improvers' Handicap and soon was well back. He never improved his position during the race. '.'•■' • •
Sid. , Wilkes led for three furlongs and then took the count. Commander Blngen then took the lead, and giving his .best exhibition to date, he won going away from the favorite, Nelson's Prince, who . is a good sort. A topping sort of 'four-year-old m Maurice Dillon won the Trial Handicap. Bonnie, Prince went a creditable race into second place and should get into the money at Motukarara. Streak,, driven by O. E. Hooper, chipped nearly eight seconds. off his time and then had to put up with third money. Kreisler went his best race for a long time when he won the Pukeuri Handicap rather •comfortably- from . Milo Minto, .the pair having' the finish to themselves. ' • ...\ Erin's Lynn, Exclusive, Billy- Whiz and Warepa were well placed early m the race, but were not good enough: Nelson Ata, a half-brother to Proud Ata, fulfilled delayed promise when he trotted solidly all the way m the Waitaki' Handicap and led from end to end. He will go a lons way •m .the trotters' classes for he can stay. Sea Queen went her best race for a
long, time when she filled second berth and All Peters and Young Carbine trotted creditable races. . .
The New Zealand Trotting Cup candidate, Prince Pointer, won the Weston Handicap well. He had to go wide at the bend for'honie, but when urged a furlong from the judge he responded and won m impressive style. Jolly . Pet tangled for seventy yards before he straightened to his gait. He was m fourth place with a mile to ; go, but could not finish m better than fifth place. Zenith, who had been tucked m behind him, then dashed into the lead, but m the straight Prince Pointer arid Bessie Logan had his measure,' Prince Pointer beating Bessie Logan by a length. ' Queen's Own, which is m the Trotting Cup, went a good race, being close to the , place-fillers at the end, Warepa astounded the crowd by annexing the Redcastle Handicap brilliantly m fast time. He is a solid chestnut gelding, but to date he has not shown stamina over longer journeys than twelve furlongs. Vecto, which finished second, is a splendid pacer but is unsound. He boxed on m good style, as did Loco, who improved three "seconds upon his time to" secure third money."
