SLEEVE VALVE
Eminent Engineer's Opinion The engine of the future, according to the eminent English engineer, H. Ricardo, will be of the sleeve valve type. HE has great faith In the sleeve engine, and has only . recently patented a very interesting means for operating single sleeve valves, by which a projecting peg. mounted on a rotating drum between two cylinders will operate two sleeves. This marks a distinct step forward m the operation of .the single sleeve engine. Very many different mechanisms for the operation sof single sleeve valves haye been brought out v since the original patents on some 20 years ago. 'The successful operation of the single sleeve requires a peculiar combination of reciprocating and oscillating movements, the sleeve turning iirst m one direction and then m the other, ; while it moves up and down m the cylinder. With the Ricardo mechanism the cylinder block can be removed complete with all valves and operating mechanism, leaving the pistons exposed as In an ordinary engine.
