METHVEN MINOR EVENTS
Chance For Young Stock To Break Ma.iden Status (By "The Toff.") .■''■'*. As tremendous nominations have been received for the annual meeting of the Methven Trotting-; Club which takes place on Saturday, it is reasonable to assume that even with a big 1 falling out on acceptance day the fields still will be very big.
OF the 44 entrarits m the, Westward •Ho Handicap all but two are on the limit. Much will . depend on the draw for position's, or ''divisions a_\ to which of the many good novices engaged will win. Little Author, has. been on tour . ,-, lately and should" be well' seasoned. He' is a smart pacer that is expected to bob up shortly. ..-_.- Dv Maurier is one of O. E. Hooper's team that will carry plenty of money, so will Little Author, which ran well at Geraldine. Luck will be a, big factor m the settlement of affairs, but with a-rea-sonable run Lhriosa, v Du Maurier 1 arid Royal Wrack should be m the picture at the finish. y ' '• y . Brandean has improved I since 'he raced at New Brighton, so has Sclit- [ tie, and they may add interest to the Drayton Handicap. Manhattan, winner, of the Sires' Produce Stakes at Dunedin, is also engaged. He is a good type of trotter that promises well. Then farther back are Victor Bingen, Nancy Bingen and Carclo. Both are fast trotters, Victor Bingen- being the most reliable. He is m R. Townley's stable and if m good order, Victor Bingen may beat Scuttle and Manhattan on Saturday. Of the remainder Nancy Bingen reads best. . There will be a scuffle for: positions at the start • of the Mount Harding Handicap to-be run over ten -furlongs. The journey, will suit Roger Lyon, Moving .Pointer, Chef, . Bonny Prince and Little Author. .- '; Much of course will depend on the, jump-out — and on that account Bonny Prince, Chef Little 'Author . may secnre enough advantage m the, first furlong to land them m the; money. •After, the Methven Cup numerous maiden candidates and a few others will line out for the Avonmore Handicap. Iri this event it usually is profitable to support the horse that has finished second m the Westward Ho. Handicap which is run earlier m the afternoon. Though the Westward Ho Handicap is a 3.52 class .and the Avonmore a 3.45 class, the fields, with a few additions to the Avonmore Handicap, .are the same and aro handicapped- on the same basis. ■;" - '.- .-5 : _ :_■.-/ y Should any of the new-comers' upset the apple-cart Becky Mine ... might do thetrick. : ,' ''...; J., .;...-.; The Visitors' HaridicajJ- is -a mile and a-quarter contest for horses capable of dashing over the jolirney m ■2.55. ; -. . '•' ■'-■ ■"■:■■ ' '"•'■ •" .■"','] 'Sitting on .....the'- front is ' Awa-'iti, which should appeal to speculators. His hardest opponents 5 may' be Whito Sun, Dick Logan .and Warepa. Scuttle, Carclo and Victor Bingen
are engaged m the River bank Handicap to be run over two miles. Carclo may outstay his. opponents. Accumulator has been working ; well, and over a journey he will.; have time to get on to his feet properly. "Once set, he will trot fast arid he looks like going two miles. . . On that account Accumulator ; may beat Carclo and Victor Bingen. The day's racing will end with the Mount Hutt Handicap, a mile saddle eyent. It is a 2.22 class. If Young Bingen is a real racehorse he will win. Expedient is hand-, ily placed, so is Solitude, Florrie Pointer and Rollo. Then there is Peter Daunt, so m the tussle for the money Solitude, Florrie Pointer, Rollo and Peter Daunt may return a dividend.
