DIFFERENT CONDITIONS
Cup Gn Saturday May Find Some Changes i - ■ ' •\■ - ■ ■■ . • " ' (JFrom "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.) Though run over the same distance as the Avondale Cup, it seems fairly certain that the Mitchelson Cup at Ellerslie on Saturday will be contested under entirely, different track conditions.
THIS means that it may not pay to take too much notice of the form displayed by 'the -most notable performers of a fortnight back. . As a matter of fact, both Mask and Star Stranger have made considerable progress, and on .firm going will be expected to Improve en their sixth and last positions, respectively. Still, both have good loads to carry, and big loads tell* even on great horses, over a distance when the opposition is reasonable. Laughing Prince has done well since arrival at Ellerslie and must appeal ~owing'-tb'being*a/ recent classic winner ln under weight-for-age. - There are numerous others m under the weight-for-age scale, but none of his class. It Is only the fear of a twelve-furlong course regarding him which causes any doubt. As 1 for Te Kara, his prospects would be considered brighter if the turf happened to be soft, while Ke is again up ln the weights. However, the dash displayed by the old fellow at Avondale was amazingly impressive and he is thoroughly wound up for the task. Of Valkon, it is contended he will do best on a firm track, but he has yet to prove himself over a mile -and a-half, though he is nearing his best.- ;. He. has a handy impost, besides being up fourth at Avondale. ■ One which does appeal as a likely lightweight is Catkin, - which won the eight furlongs and a-half Marangai, at, Wanganui, from several handicap winners. <■- . aßiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitiiiiiiiiuiiiiiiiiiiiiimiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiuiiiiiiiiiiiriiiiiiiiiinuiiiiiiiiiii ■uiiiiiiiitKmiillilHllllllllllllllllllltlilltlllillliiiiiiiimi miiinit iiminminirnHMllimmilltlMl

The cry about him is that he would do best m damp going, but the grassy top at Ellerslie may not prove entirely against hliri hitting out. . Boyal Mint is m the right order un -• der muddy conditions, but that is very doubtful, though it ls whispered Metcalfe may be 'his pilot — this would ensure safe handling. . , '■> The Hawk will have to be takeh on trust at his age over the distance. Desert Glow, at 7.0, .is. expected to make a serious' bid this trip and Queen Arch is m at an impost which should make her prominent for most part. Papatu occasionally shines up, but is generally disappointing.. '•. Mint Leaf may be a possibility, but Sir Archie, Tidal and.. Transformer hardly, appeal.
