Friend Quartermain

THE scales of justice are gravitated according to the weight of evidence for or against the accused, and thereby does the prosecuting police officer become a vital part of its delicate manipulation. : ' • It might secrii, therefore, that there exists an unguarded surface through which prejudicial evidence might thrust its ugly head. And does it? Well, not m the Dunedin police court when Senicft. -sergeant Quartermain is on the job, for he's the very essence of equity, giving every one ;of his "clients" a fair field and no favors ir.- "i respective of class, creed or crime.

A man who knows the world for what it is, Arthur Garnet Quartermain can quickly distinguish betweeri the plausible exculpations' of the warpminded criminal and the honest pleadings of a truly repentant wrongdoer, and where a soft word for the man m the dock is worthy it never fails to fall from the lips of A.G.Q.

Born m Ottawa, Canada, Quartermain arrived m New Zealand when only a kid, and at the age of 18 entered the service of the Artillery, which was then a sort of "hardening course" or "testing term" for the more important social duty of the police.

A specialist m finger-print-ology, A.Q. is a highly respected and versatile member of the force. His long and meritorious service has carried him through every branch of his department, and m 1925 he was appointed to Dunedin as senior-sergeant.
