WRACKLER SHOWS FORM

• , (By "The; Toff.") With full knowledge of the candidates for the Great Northern Derby, victory for H. F. Nicholl's gelding, Wrackler, seems assured, provided he trains on without receiving 1 any set-backs.

THIS year the Great Northern Derby of 1000sbvs.-will.be decided at the Auckland Trotting Club's spring meeting for which- October 13 and 17 have been selected. The Derby will be run on the first day. ' At the ■ moment, 22 three-year-olds retain the" privilege to compete, but another payment still has to be made. Of the quota eligible, the ABhburton sportsman, H. F. Nicoll, has three engaged, and already he has made known his intention to start two of them, Wrackler, which, won at Ashburton on Saturday, and Wrackeen which occupied third berth at the same fixture. Wrackeen's mission on Saturday was a mile and a-half, which she compassed m 3.27 4-5— quite a good performance for a three-year-old at this period of the season. • But, good and all as was Wrack-' een's achievement, it was overshadowed by the easy manner m which Wrackler beat a promising field m a bout over a mile and aquarter. He did it as if an extra two furlongs would have been just as easy for him.

Wrackler is another sample of advanced breeding. Both his sire, Wrack, arid his dam, Trix Pointer, were bred m America. Wrackler first astonished the light harness community by running third m his initial start, completing the twelve fux-longs m 3^29 4-5 when he was a two-year-old. Unfortunately for his owner, he then contracted a very bad cold which left him impaired for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, m which he finished third. Since then, he has made a splendid recovery, and though he only registered 2.52 2-5 for ten furlongs on Saturday last, it is safe, to assume that he could have done much better had he been forced to do so. Regarding the balance of the Great Northern Derby field,, it is gratifying to state that Sonoma Child, winner of the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, is training on satisfactorily. - At Auckland, a big opinion has been formed of. the filly, Trustworthy, by Worthy <Bond.
