FOR SYDNEY
Bankhead After The Thousand (By "The Toff.")/ New Zealand is after the Byd-. ney "Thousand", again. Jimmy Bryce has sent Bankhead over and provided all goes well with the gelding he - should annex the honors. J. Bryce Junr. will be his pilot. , FOR many years New Zealand owners have been destfdus of getting hold of a pacer good enough to effect a coup m the Sydney "Thousand." While several' have, early m each season promised to go across for the prize, few have got there. The last New Zealand horse to cross the Tasman for the "Thousand" was Hal Zolock. i While he was good enough to win when he left Hawkes Bay, misfortune stood m the way of the late B. Shadbolt achieving his goal. :'..'.■. Last Thursday, the six-year-old gelding Bankhead sailed for Sydney m charge of J. Bryce Jr. The race will be run a few days after, his arrival, and the gelding will return to the Dominion by the .first ship to leave Sydney after the race. '•■-..' When he made his bow to the public, Bankhead showed nervousness at the barrier, and not until the Wellington Trotting Club's fixture held on December 10, 1927, did he begin properly. ' Needless to state, he won easily, after accounting for; the mile and a-half m 3.30 4/5. Since then, he has not been over- raced. Bankhead is a fast pacer, and a good stayer, and when he returns from the Commonwealth, he will endeavor to emulate his full-brother, Cardinal Logan, and his half-sister, Quality.
