SATURDAY'S DERBY DAY

Prince Humphrey Given Show Against Mollison

(By Cable.— From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Sydney Representative.) Last Saturday, at rural Hawkesbury, was a bad day for Maorilanders, but Saturday next may see a big improvement.

THE spring meeting opens at Randwick and apart from the handicap races, m which numerous Maorilanders are, engaged, Limerick looks a certainty for the Spring Stakes. | His only serious opponent is Winalot, which he has beaten twice. . Limerick looks like going through the spring carnival unbeaten. Prince Humphrey and Roscrea are the New Zealand Derby hopes. Prince Humphrey's connections are very sanguine of his chance against Mollison. They point out that the last two furlongs will see the "Prince" at his best. Even though there seems no doubt as to Mollison's ability to stay, they look to the "Prince's" gameness and stamina to pull him through. Roscrea is not such a good proposition, though Fred Jones expects him to run, a good race. Mollison looks the winner, however, with Prince Humphrey the next best; Boston's defeat m the Hawkesbury Park , Stakes on Saturday was a sad blow to his connections.

H© was heavily backed, but could only finish third, after being handy the whole way. Oratrix did a little better, though she was only a poor second to the Metropolitan fancy, Sharp Son, being beaten six lengths. Oratrix gave promise, by running to Sharp Son near the turn, but then he ran right away from her. Amplifier was another Maorilander .to finish second. He came with a wet sail m the Three-Year-Old Handicap, but had no hope with the winner, Kavalli. Oratrix and Amplifier may win before returning home. Raasay is not to run m the Derby. He has not done well since he last raced and may not race again for a while. In the Shade, the Metropolitan hope, is going well on the tracks and may be hard to beat. He was badly handled when beaten at Rosehill on Saturday week. More patiently Ridden this time he may do better. The prospects of Maorlla'nd horses m the important Randwick races are bright.
