THE RETORT DISCOURTEOUS
DATHER a good story is going the rounds just now as to the adven- " ture of the little wife of a Wellington doctor, who really thought she could play bridge, but whose experience was one of penny points only. \ Being invited by a new friend for "luncheon and bridge to follow," she sallied forth and spent a thoroughly happy afternoon 6aylng. "Partner, did I revoke?? . The best day comes to an end, however, and, when the lady rose to go, her hostess touched her on the arm and said: "You owe me £5, you know." Needless to say, the doctor's wife hadn't known, and, m a state of great concern, sought out her husband, pursued by horrid visions of a summer spent m last year's hat. The good doctor sat him down to consider and m due time wrote out a cheque for £5/10/6 — a polite little note enclosed explaining that the 10/6 was due for cost of luncheon, as he didn't want his wife to be indebted to the proprietor of a gambling den.
