Padlock Cake-walked the Pacers In N.Z. Cup Trial
(By "The Toff.") Padlock, the North Island hope m the next New Zealand Cup, simply toyed with his opponents m the 1 big trial at Hutt Park. Now the experts are adopting the "I told you so" attitude and are marking down the son of Hal Zolock as winner of the trotters' richest prize.
PADLOCK'S task was from 2.43 m a JT 2.46 class, and the leisurely manner m which he gathered the front-markers, and then dodged away home, amazed the crowd; / When the race was all .over, one could hear the experts making a confident grunt to the effect that Padlodk would be home and dried m the New Zealand Trotting Cup, which will be run at Addlngton m November. Looking tike a lithe-limbed athlete, the aged son of Hal Zolook and Rawene just toyed 'with Great , Bingen, Talent and Jack Pottß. Once into the straight, W. Hughes was content to have Padlock juat clear of his desperately- driven opponents, but when within fifty yards of the Judge, Great Bingen made one of his determined rushes. Hughes noticed this and eased his grip on Padlock a little, In the last bit Padlock flew from Great Bingen, and though Hughes took a pull on him ten yards off the winning post, hia candidate still waa a length clear of

Great Bingen. It is admitted that Great Bingen was hampered m getting on the Journey by the heavy state of the track, where the ; mile and a- quarter races are started at Petone, and also that Jack Potts prefers firm footing. But to allow such as Great Bingen and Jack Potts to get near to him and then laugh at them trying to catch him was what Padlock did at Wellington. Regarding the remainder of the oandidates, it may be pointed out that after losing several lengths through breaking at the start. Native Chief was m fifth place with six furlongs j to go, but he stopped badly over, the concluding stages. < Daphne de Oro and Acroc misfired m their gait at the start, and Blaok Admiral went well for a mile, where his condition gave out. The sectional tiroes were: Two furlongs m 37seoa:; half-mile, 1.10; mile m 2.21 2/5, and the ten furlongs In 2.58 8/B.
