WHANGED AT WANGANUI
Jockey
and Trainer To Pay The Penalty
The first deoent spring 1 meeting of the new season was at Wanganui last week, and something happened.
SO early m the year the hardened raoegoer looks on these early meetings with more than a little suspioion — and there were several cases at Wanganui. But only one was thought worthy of taking upstairs. When Valkon came back to weigh m after running .third m the Marangai, his trainer and Jockey were told that they could do a bit of wearing out of the old oarpet. So to the committee room they adjourned for a lengthy spell. When the day's racing had finished the Inquiry hadn't, and it was not until after the first race on Saturday that the washing up was conolufied. Out came the sentence — Ernie Keesing and Alf. Cox were to witness the next twelve months' racing from a position on the outer. They went out on a oharge of corrupt practice. There is very little to be said
about the business, and perhaps the least said the better, for the penalty has been Imposed. Valkon was a runner the second, day, when he had the services of Bert Tinker. It is said the stipes had a few words with Tinker before he went out, and it certainly looked like something of that kind had happened. Tinker saw tb it that he did not get Valkon snookered, aa on the first day. He Jumped him out of the barrier and essayed to lead all the way. Everything that oame along, Tinker took on and It was no won* der to find the horse stopping over the last furlong. He ran fourth. In discussing the Marangai last week, "N.Z. Truth" had the following to say of Valkon: "Valkon will be watched with more than passing interest, In view of Avondale." He was watohed all right.
