FEW STAYERS ENGAGED
Avondale Cup Field Has Crowd Thinking Hard
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Speoial Auckland Representative.)
Though sixteen figure im the mile and a-half Avondale Cup at time of writing, no more than half a dozen have given real evidence, so far, that they are partial to a journey.
SOME of the acceptors are being experimented with as stayers, and because they have indulged In winter racing, and are fairly fit, it is within the bounds of possibility that something under eight stone may prove good enough to take the prize. But the only way to get down to solid reasoning Is to lean towards th« provod otayera. To begin With Star Stranger Is m a olasß by himself, but weight will stop a train, and it Is hard to plump for the son of Martian so early In the spring with the steadier of ten stone. Mask, at 9.6, has got the distanoe and his racing at Wanganui will sharpen him up a lot. Te Kara is ageing, though reports from Te Awamutu are that there Is a lot of life m the old dog yet. Nukumai has won twelve-furlong flat events — Jumpers' flats with welter loads — and there was something more than mere fluke about his third m. the ten-furlong Higgle Handicap at Wanganui. He carried eight pounds more than allotted over the extra distance this week-end. .Tommy Green Is to steer him, and the softer the ground the greater his chance at 8.2. The right people are hopeful regarding King Lv, it beintf their opinion that he will go a respeotable mile and a-half. - , He was close up fifth In the great «MnimmOTunrtt*«««Bnreoßrt»«»«mii«»«irmmmii«mmiimMmmmmtuin«niiim> h"i—h» .nummi..— nmmumminnmnmiiniiniiiiiimiiiiiiiii iinimnm mil
light for Eclipse Stake honors last week and was sticking on. ' Valkon has yet to get a mjlo and , a- half safely, and opinions differ «« to whether he is absolutely ready ' and hardened for the distanoe. Wanganui displays left "N.Z. Truth's" Auckland representative without definite conclusions, but up to ten furlongs it seems he is liable any time* Paltonu's boom has gone oft! a bit, though he is at a handy impost. Blsox must be a hope at 7.3, while Desert Glow does best on firm ground. Queen Arch has yet to go twelve furlongs safely, but will not be oaught short of racing. As for Royal Mint he can plug: along any distance, but has wanted very thick going to give of his best. He suffered a knock recently, but got over it before the day. 1 Vivo may not relish the distance, while Beau Cavalier will carry some money from firm admirers. An Avondale Cup seems too rich, though. King Emerald is working well since two good seconds over middle distances m the winter, and he may be m the picture for a long way-— even to the finish. It seems a tough proposition to solve, but three to loom into the picture may be: NUKUMAI, (VfASK and VALKON. urmnim iiiiiiiiMiiiiiimimiiiiiiiiiiniinimimfflmnmmiiimmmiiiiiiin iiiiiiiiiimiimiiimim uiiumiuiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiuiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiuiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiui
