Versatile West
AN inveterate smoker, Ernest V. West . is as well known around Palmerston North as the town clock, and having played an important part In designing many of the excellent structures that have been erected m the inland city, there is ample reason tor his popularity. Palmerston North proudly claims him as one of her sons, for there was he born, bred and served his* apprenticeship and paved the way for a distinguished tour of England, the Continent, U.S.A. and Canada. ' Ernie has sat at the 1 Borough Council table with the other city fathers and also filled the post of chairman of the College St. School Committee, but now he has his hands fully occupied m the management of his business, the seeds of which, were sown by his father, and he has little time ,to devote to the welfare /of the public When he can get away from the bustle arid strife of this life he betakes himself to the National Park and. there dons his size ten mountaineering 'boots and scales over the various hillocks and other undulations. He also enjoys the thrills of ski-ing and, many of his week-ends are taken up m trekking after wild game ; with his gun, the products of such shots enhancing his .dinner table. .-■'-... . . The ballroom, too, is not without its appeal to him, and though he has not •yet mastered the "Yale Blues" or the "Heebie Jeebies" he does enjoy twinkling his toes, to a fox- trot tune, / He is firmly convinced of Palmerston North's future as an important business centre.
