TWANGING THE LONG BOW
IF coincidence were the target m arohery and men with names akin to that of John William Hope were competitors with long bows, there would be much plucking and twanging of bowstrings, but very few bulls-eyes. Twelve months ago Magistrate Hunt sentenced Hope to six months' imprisonment for failure to maintain a wife he deserted, m England, the offence being aggravated by a bigamous marriage with another, woman. Hope is gifted with an exaggerated faculty of sang-froid and optimism — he must be when it is. remembered that he tried to prove he was suffering the sins of another Hope's misadventure. Last week Mr. Justice Reed indicated that sheer coincidence m names was too ingenuous a defence; that the ping-ping of long bows had stolen upon his hearing. The reason why he thought so will be disclosed m next week's issue of "N.Z. Truth."
