Seddon Shield Stays At Home

(From "?T.Z. Truth's" Nelson Rep.) Tho football season closed m Nelson on Saturday with, the final contest of the Soddon Shield round . —Nelson (holders) v.- Golden Bay-Motueka. The home team retained the trophy, scoring one try to the visitors' nil. DAIN began to fall Juat as the game 1V commenced after five minutes open play, during which Nelson notched their only try, the ball became too/ slippery to handle* and both sets of backs w.ere • useless. It -is probable that fine weather would have given Nelson a decided superiority over their opponents, but as it was the fate of the battle -was left m the hands of the opposing backs between whom there was little to choose. After the -ball became too greasy to be handled with any certainty, both teams adopted kick and follow-up tactics. With a strong wind and rain to help them Nelson attacked from the kickoff. ■-.-.■• • . Three minutes had gone when from a scrum Fowler sent the, ball to Thompson, to Watson, who short punted cleverly into a gap. Thompson regained possession -'and sent Boyce over m the corner for a try. Right through the remainder of the game the forwards had a great tussle, as the. backs were seldom able to get into action. ; . ; Several dangerous rushes by the visiting forwards •. were; spoilt by infringements, when they were close to the Nelson line. The Nelson team, too, had several chances, but the slippery ball prevented; any. finished movements. .. . .. V' /With three minutes, to •go the visit.ors were given a chance to even the 'points, with a penalty kick near the posts, but missed. ' ; ■ <. Bowers, (Nelson), .and Sexton : (Bays), .the two full-back's, were outstanding.; ' , \ . Neither of them made a mistake all day, and fielded', the ball under the worst conditions. ... . \ ■ ; .. ..Clark, the Bay centre, was .the next best back on the field, with Watson, a Nelson five-eighths', running him a. close second. ■''In I '-' the- forwards, N. Holyoak and Ben semann were the beat of the visitors, and led many dangerous rushes. Cross, Young and W. Snow were the pick of the Nelson pack, Cross especially/contributing good work.
