THE CRACKS WILL MEET

Possibilities of Great Tussle In N.Z. Cup Trial

(By "The Toff.")

Considerable interest is being taken m the New Zealand Trotting Gup Trial Handicap, which occupies a prominent place m the programme of the Wellington Trotting Club's spring* meeting at Petone on Saturday.

OF the eight acceptors, six are engaged m the big event of the year to be decided at Addington m November. Their presence will add a fillip to light-harness raoing at Wellington, where their doings will be closely'watched, and their condition widely commented upon. Of the two on the front mark Daphne de Oro is most forward m condition and her form at Addington last month made it plain that she will tramp a hot mile and a- quarter. She has an advantage over Black Admiral, which has not. had a race for some time. Previously, Black Admiral has done jwell on the Petone course, but it is likely that his condition will give out m what points to being a solidly run ten furlongs. . So much has been stated about Padlock's remarkable speed that from 24yds. he will have to be seriously reckoned with. „, ' , . At Addington last Easter, he beat a high-class field with one hand tied ( to his back. He is a rapid beginner and being one of the favored candidates for the £8000' prize m November, he will of course carry .a lot of moneyon Saturday.

Acron's form does not suggest vlctory for him, but Great Bingen is certain to make a big bid for the honors. He has done • well since the August meeting, and* he can handle the Petone track, He is conceding 12yds. to Jack Potts which, if at his best, would offer stout opposition. ' Regarding Native Chief much depends on how he leaves the mark. At Wellington he probably will have the services of an assistant at the start, who may be the means of the brilliant pacer getting on the journey quickly, He is set to give Great Bingen 12yc!s. and it j s doubtful if he will be equal to the job-4hat is taking [nto consideration thai Native chief will lose ground at the aendoff > ■ " . , , . , _ . In summing up what should be 'a great tussle among champions, Padlock, Great Bingen and Daphne de Oro may share the honors. . . ~ ' Chef, a three-year-old by Rey de Oro from a mare by Logan Pointer from Innisfail (a Dunedin Cup winner), made his first appearance at New Brighton and acted nicely for a green pacer.
