Their Friend
ANY day m the' , Auckland Police Court a liiiddle-aged man may be ■.'.• seen standing near the dock: peering through -his glasses ready to give any details the magistrate may require regarding the prisoner. ■ '■'; He has .his finger on the pulse of petty pilfering,, besides more important cases, and' he has many wrongdoers under his. wing. He is Probation Officer Campbell, a man fully equipped with 'information about his subject. . Convicted rpersons no doubt/ do not look for friends m the court, but it has" been niade obvious on many occasions that it is the report of this ; man ; who fully understands the case which often assists the magistrate m reaching his decision. . His ■■ department must have •; many visits from: those who have. been, ordered to report ■to the probation officer, and it is only by excellent organisation bF Officer Campbell that the system, can be carried out with effect.
