THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1928,
AS pathetic as any news that could ue doled out to the poor old taxpayer is the Railways statement that revenue is definitely on the toboggan, sliding rapidly, dangerously, hopelessly down the precipice of deficit. Figures published showed a big falling off: m passengers since 1927, and a consequently huge hole m the total receipts. The position is serious now, and it is going to get worse. What is wanted is quick, drastic action to review the whole situation, and get the ratepayer out , of the disaster before vthe collapse is complete. , ; Railways are doomed all over the world, and m New Zealand as much as anywhere else. « Their demise may be postponed through an agonising series of financial slumps, or it may come suddenly. But it will come, and the fact must be faced. r This is the day of motor transport. ■ '. .'.. . . :r y:-.{.'. L .[ ... ".-.
