NOT DISGRACED Southland Has Win Over Timaru (From "N.Z. Truth's" Invercargill Rep.)Southland scored a one-point * victory over South Canterbury, the issue being m doubt until the final whistle. THERE were, two big features m the game, namely, the collaring of South Canterbury and the breeze, which gave scoring positions very readily, the maroons using it better than their opponents did. With eight points, to nil m «the first spell Southland had too narrow a margin to hold against the wind m the second session and but foi their great collaring they would have been down a score of points. Time after time the maroon backs were pulled down inches away from the line. For Southland three tries came m the last half hour. Though , South Canterbury made five clearances of back attacks the home forwards bunched them into broken lines, two tries coming from the massed attacks. Batchelor, Southern and Cockroft excelled m that order. McAuliffe was the best of the home backs, both on defence and attacli. At half, Roper, of South Canterbury, was m everything and promises to be a Dalley. Trotter played a sparkling game at wing threequarter, his running being strong. Mcßride and W. Manning were prominent m the line-out. Halstead, as rover, did some fine work. He stood well away from the scrum and got to the maroon backs before the passing was free of interference from the forward*
