A CLOSE CALL
Nelson Nearly Loses Seddon Shield (From "N.Z. Truth's" Nelson Rep.) Nelson had a close call to losing the Seddon Shield on Saturday for if Marlborough had had a good kick amongst their team they could have added at least six points to their score. JJOWEVER, the result, ten all, was a •*•* fair indication of the relative worth of the teams. On the day's .play it would have been hai'd to choose between them. Nelson seemed to sweep the Marlborough men off their feet during the first half hour of the play and at half-time the score was 10—3 m favor of the holders of the Shield! After, the, interval Marlborough forged ahead and by determined < allround play eventually brought the score even. Both teams put m tremendous efforts for the remaining fifteen, minutes, but there was no further score. ' • '* • The Nelson backs had their innings m the first spell. Time after time they launched dangerous passing movements many of which just" missed. ■ ' There is no doubt that if this type of open play had continued throughout the game Nelson would have come out on top with a big margin to spare. Just before halftime Reed, the Nelson captain, started what proved a disastrous policy of playing to the forwards. With monotonous consistency he ignored his waiting backs and ran sback into' the ruck thus preventing Nelson from ' using what was undoubtedly their strongest weapon. The ensuing forward game seemed to suit the Marlborough pack and their frequent dribbling rushes were always dangerous. The visiting backs, although they threw the ball, about well, had not the finished; set that their opponents possessed. The only time they were any use was when Satherley scored m the second spell. .., ' ' With ten points to nil m their favor Nelson looked to be absolutely out of danger. It was not : a minute later that Reed failed to find, the line and ■ Hounsell, the opposing half, fielded the ball and was force's along by his pack. They finished up m a sacks-on-the-mill heap over the line and when they were sorted put the referee signalled miiiiiuiniiniinnniiiiiiiiiiuiiinniniiiiiiiiiiiliiiuiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiHiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
out that Hounsell had been successful m securing a try. This was the turning point of the game. * The second half opened with, some mixed play, Nelson nearly scoring once. Marlborough then kept up a hammering^ attack for twenty minutes and finally ;. they started scoring to continue until ' they were level with Nelson. There were no further scores, but shortly before time'- Marlborough were given an easy chance 'to win the Shield with a penalty from the 25. The kick missed. : r McDonald, the Marlborough first five r eighths, was the most dangerous . of their-backs. Bartlett was weak at i full-back and it must have been a relief .for the visitors' supporters when he was hurt and had to retire. Botham 1 and Smith were the pick of their for--1 wards. . • Reed's tactics undoubtedly robbed the Nelson team of many points, but he made up for this m some degree by ;.' his two converting kicks. F; Fowler, ; at haifjt was the brightest of the backs. Boyce played} a splendid defensive game,. All the forwards played' well, but Snow and Max were outstanding. The last Seddon Shield game this season' will be played on Saturday against Golden Bay-Motueka. • GIN PILLS WILL HELP YOU.
