Championship Still In Doubt (Prom "N.Z. Truth's" Wanganui Rep.) After a 'month's interval, the Wanganui championship games were resumed on Saturday* when Marist defeated County by 11 to 4, Technical Old Boys put down Old 'Boys by 8 to 3 and Pirates triumphed over Kaierau by 6 to 3. THE championship points now stand: Pirates 17, Marist 16, Kaierau 11, Technical" Old Boys 8, County 6 and Ratana 3. Marist have two games to play and if they win both they will carry off the premiership.' . ; Pirates have only one more •match, which should be fairly easy for them, but Marist* have to meet Kaierau — a team capable of defeating them if they play up to top form. The position, therefore, is full of possibilities. Marist and County played at Wangaehu. County made a good fight of it and led at« half-time by 4 to, 3. In the second spell, Marist proved superior and put on 8 points, finally winning by 11 to 4. Technical Old Boys met a weak Old Boys' team and won after a very poor display by 8 to 3. IN THE NICK OFTIME There was nothing to enthuse over m the Pirate — Kaierau match until the concluding stages were entered upon. Kaierau relied on their forwards and early secured a "stranglehold." on the blacks, who looked to their backs to win the game for them. There was no score m the first half, but shortly after changing ends Kaierau kicked a penalty goal. There was no alteration m the score until five minutes from the end. With only ten .minutes left for play, the game looked to be all over bar shouting, as Pirates were apparently a beaten team. Kaierau set up an attack and only solid defence kept them out. Then came a dramatic change. From a scrum five yards out, for once the blacks hooked the ball; Duncan snapped it up, dodged a couple cleverly and then the leather went across to Williams, the speedy winger, who got away and ran to the other end of the field to score the finest try of the season. The kick went astray and the scores were even, with only three minutes to go. Again the blacks pot their rearguard going and a pretty bit of passing ended m McMillan racing • over to win the game just as the bell was ready to ring.
