BIG FIELDS AT MARTON

It Is Only One-day Fixture This Season Usually the Marton club's spring meeting is a two-day affair, hut this season it is confined to one.

THE second day has been shifted well] down the calendar, and will be held as a one-day meeting iii May. Next Wednesday the club should be able to present a splendid programme; Wonderful nominations were received from all over the island and when the -acceptances are posted it will probably be found that the fields are if anything too big. . Owners and trainers arc going to take the opportunity of getting m some work, and the task of endeavoring to anticipate likely place-getters 'is a tough one with so much m the dark. Dannevirke, this week, may give a slight lead, but it will help little. The Trial Stakes starts off the day and two from north with something to their credit are Upoko and Foreign Fancy. Mauriaena was placed m two-yearr old races at Ellerslie at Christmas time and that is some recommendation, If Cohesion goes well at Dannevirke he will carry the money m the Rata Hurdles. Diana's Lad won two races down south and they were quite fair performances. Then there is Olympic, which scored at Trentham and paid the big dividend. There is quite a good field of smart hacks m the Spring Cup and wagering will be spirited. Pangolin, after his prominence at the National meeting, will be the-most liked if he runs. In his last outing he ran third to Royal Saxon and Battle Colours, open I handicap horses. I

Singleton is one that can look after himself and he is also a cut above the average run of hacks. Gold Cure won two at Trentham and was not bothered either day, while Maui and Teri can hold their own. It is going to be a ..great battle for the Cup and three that appeal are Pangolin, Singleton and Gold Cure. Many of the horses on the'big handicap are coming m fresh and will be at a big disadvantage when stacked up against those which have been racing through the winter, Bisox, winner of the Winter Cup,. Kilmiss and Queen Arch come under the heading of the fit ones. ' The Hunt Cup Steeplechase points to Master Arch and Mataipuke being m the picture. The latter ran two good seconds at the National. Knightlike has started off the new season well and his Hastings win will bring him into favor for the Electric Handicap. Callanmore won at Trentham, while Lucy Rose had pace last season. Quite a few celebrities are nominated for the Railway Handicap and many of them will be hayj ng a pipe-opener, Punters will want to be shown how before they feel m the humor to stick it on heavy. King Lv has racing condition and that may help, while Tea Time conies m and races well fresh. Much the same state of affairs prevails m the concluding event, but a recent winner is Pale Star.
