(From "N.Z. Truth's"

TN last week's notes it was mentioned that Civility was showing signs of lameness and that F. Lind would have difficulty m keeping her going. It will come as no surprise to readers of "Truth," therefore, to learn that the Elystan mare, has run her last race and is to be retired to the matrons' paddock. , '# # # . Civility began racing m "Bert" Russell's colors, and as a two -year- old won £440, as a three-year-old she annexed £1670, and the next year £1870. As a five-year-old sjie changed hands,. Messrs. H. M. Speed and C. Russell purchasing her. She won only £1095 that season, but £4070 was her portion the following year. Saddled up last season she failed to score a win. Her turf record reads: Placings, 21 firsts, 16 seconds, 12 thirds. Total stakes win, £9145. # . * * The one-time speedy mare Avola has foaled a filly to Ruapapa. * ■ # * A colt foal by Limond — Pennon arrived three days too soon, July 29, which is very hard luck for/ G. M. Currie, as all Pennon's stock have been brilliant gallopers. # # * W. Dwyer has Kiosk looking m great order for this time of the. year, and the son of Tea Tray will be very hard to beat m the Railway at Marton. It is said Kiosk is to be ridden by an apprentice, and if so will have to carry a big load of lead. He will also carry a heap of gold. * # • The gelding Lady's Boy is well forward and should be capable of running a good race m whatever he starts at Marton. He is m the Hack Cup and also the Railway, but it is more than likely he will take on the former, though much depends on the weight. • • * It is intended to clear the trees anfl stumps on the outside of the course proper at Wangaiiui down the back, level up the ground and erect permanent fences for steeplechasing events where possible. * * # . Absurd, whose death occurred at Koatanui last week, proved a wonderful bargain 'for G. M. Currie, who imported the son of Sunbrldge. His stock won over £250,000, and brought a bjg amount at the sales. Absurd got many brilliant sprinters, but they all stopped nearly as suddenly as they began after going a certain distance! •'■■■• • There is little doubt but that Ceremony, the two-year-old son of Absurd — Pennon, will prove exceptionally fast when properly wound up. He will be given a run m the parade at Wanganui, and this ' should do him a lot of good m view of. his Avondale engagements, which will be his first race.
