WHEN Captain Sarto fell at the " big fence at the top of the straight m the Aylesbury Steeplechase on Saturday he came an awful cropper, and the result was a broken back. The mishap was a severe one to his owner, "Put" Hogan, who has not experienced hfs share of the blessings of late. During the winter the "Captain" had managed to win a stake every ■', so often, and the loss is something m the nature of a stolen meal ticket. |

It took him all his time to beat Ranui, and had the saddle not slipped on that gelding a good way from home, Tuki would have been second. There was perhaps some merit m beating Wiltshire so comfortably, but then many contended that the Waikato gelding should not have been a runner. It was asking a young horse a good deal to run him again, and he had a rise of twenty pounds, too. The National race had its effect as running m the Beaufort proved. "Wiltshire did everything that he didn't do m the National.
