A SPLENDID INVENTION
NoVel Super-Charger Placed On The Market
AN entirely new form of super-charger has been placed on the market which appears lively to play a very big part m rendering this useful accessory popular.
IT is radically different from anything conceived previously, and as it costs nothing to run, that is, it does not get its power from the engine itself, it has that much more to recommend it. The device takes the form of a turbine wheel placed m the exhaust pipe. This wheel rotates' a shaft having at the other end an impeller, which draws the mixture from the carburettor and delivers it under pressure to the induction manifold. It can be seen that the rate of supercharging is directly proportionate to the rate the engine is running — the faster the stream of exhaust gases blow past the turbine the faster the impeller turns.
. On bench tests the turbine has reached .'enormous' speeds ranging up to 20,000 per minute. It runs on finely adjusted ball bearings which are fed with oil from the engine supply. ' It is estimated that the device could be marketed and fitted for a total cost of £10 to £12/10/-, including alterations to the existing exhaust pipe an.d carburettor fittings. A feature of this type of supercharger is that it is practically silent m operation except for*a whine at very high speeds; and this is not noticed above the engine noise.
