HPHE balance-sheet for last season 1 shows the club to be short of money, and with a bank overdraft that already is difficult enough to surmount, even should big success be assured m the future. But it is not, for since the tramway board discontinued the tram service to the course, the public will not turn out as freely as they used to do. At any rate, that has been the position at the two gatherings held by the club since ,the tram-lines were pulled up When the Duke of York visited Christchurch, the New Brighton club held its meeting at Addington and enjoyed a big profit from that venture. Addington Is the popular ground, for trotting contests. It is well sei-ved by trams, and, if necessary, by a train service as well, and is much more conveniently situated than New Brighton. With the time opportune for the New Brighton club to negotiate with the Canterbury Park and New Zealand Metropolitan clubs regarding a transfer to Addington, the seaside officials' best friends would like to see some move made towards a scheme that would ensure them success. Everybody fully appreciates %h« sen-
ton club to hang on to its place of identity. But might not the club lose its identity — and the bit of money it has left — by continuing to race on its old course? So far as the three Christchurch clubs are concerned, any attempt at a> reduction of permits would not save them, even if they each had a course of their own. And it matters not a jot whether the New Brighton club races at New Brighton or at Addington; if the authorities ever decide to take away its permits, they will do so. No reliance can be placed on the belief that to retain its ground at New Brighton means, security. It does not. By transferring their activities to Addington, the New Brighton officials would get.rid of a load of worry and Boon be m a good way to stabilizing the finances of the club.
