CHOPPED OUT

In Future View Is Obstructed

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Auckland Rep.) .Those who used to gather m the ladies 1 mile to view the raoes at Ellerslie from the roadside will In future find that point of vantage less interesting. A SEVEN-FOOT -SIX corrugated iron ** fence is beirig erected on the boundary of the race -course alongside the road. It extends from the top of the hill to a point below where the horses turn down the incline m steeplechase races. ! Hitherto large nrowd« have frequently gathered on the roadside at the point mentioned when important events were being run, and particularly on Great Northern Steeplechase day. Now they will have to go elsewhere where the view will not be nearly so good. What made the spot so interesting was the fact that m the steeplechase events ihe fences on the hill were right under the eyes of those on the roadside. Quite a lot of people are up against the action of the club m shutting Out the View, but m reality the club had to do something of the sort owing to the risk of accident from outsiders encroaching on the steeplechase track. As a matter of fact, some of the mishaps of the past on top of the hill have been put down to stray dogs, or waste paper. It will still be ppssible for outsiders to gain a glimpse of important events further down ladies' mile towards Ellerslie, though, of course, there will not be such a close-up view of the contestants as there was on top of the rise. It is probable that Potoanui will race m hack steeplechase events at the spring meetings. He was schooled over a few big fences last week and shaped really well.
