A GOOD START
Loughrea Shows That He Can Jump
When a first-class performer on the flat takes to hurdling, there Is always a lot of interest m his movements. QN Tuesday, at Ricoarton, one which had made his name on the fiat took I on the other game— and made a very promising start at it, too. This was Loughrea, which, a few years back, was a name to conjure with. Some years ago he won a Dunedin Cup, defeating that good horse, Bal.dowa and then he went to Trentham to tackle the Wellington Cup. Up north they have a habit of totally disregarding form m the south, but Loughrea upset the issue by winning on the Wellington course — upsetting what was thought to' be a good thing m Limelight. Very little has .been seen of Loughrea during the past three years, but when he came out to contest the Hunters' Hurdles at Riocarton this week many remembered his former glories. That he could jump, he showed m the early stages. Over the first five furlongs, he went with the best of them — and then he hit one. , . : It took a lot of steam out of him and he temporarily retired. Coming to the home turn, he . showed up again and as they turned into the straight he was being proclaimed a likely winner. But -win he could not — and at the finish he was fifth. ; It was more than a promising- start for a maiden hurdler, and providing he remains .sound there .should be money for the dual Cup winner. As a result of a fall off Progressor at Gisborne, H. Dulieu is nursing a broken collarbone.-
