JACK'S REPLY
Life On Trainers 1 Stand
By no means Is all the humor In this world confined to the theatre. but then 'tis said the whole world is a stage. rjNB can always look for some fun on the trainers' stand and at Riccarton the other day there was raised a laugh that must have been heard In town. Jaok Pearson has a man-size voice and when he lets go he can always be heard. During the running of the Lawford Steeplechase, and after Pearson's candidate had fallen, he commented that "Hogan's horse is going well." "Put" was standing m the back of the stand and he apparently did not feel too confident, for, m a halfhearted manner, he announced that his horse had Jumped on Pearson's horse when 'the latter fell at Cutts*. . There was no hesitation, no looking t-for words with Jack. Back he came 'like lightning: 7 "He couldn't Jump on anything bet- •-: ter, could he?" • The stand roared, and nobody laughed louder than Hogan. Pearson will never be forgotten by •<. those who were m earshot at a hunt meeting on the same course several years back. That day : Rational made sure of clearing the hurdle m front of the stand .by leaping feet above the obstacle and Pearson's plaintive query: "Will he never come down?" broke up the crowd. , The racing world could do with a few more of the Pearson type — he's a man who could never make ' an enemy. There are a good many roughies m work at Ellerslie. /Unless some of them can improve considerably upon previous displays, they are going to find it hard to win.
