STRAIGHT BITS AND SPURS
Northern Notes (From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland , ; Re P-> ■ DAHADUR broke down at Gisborne i and was unable to keep his engagements. He has been unsound for some time. .■•■■; # # ■ * . ■ Unless present intentions are changed, Mithra will return from Sydney m time to contest the Avondale Guineas m September.. She should be more seasoned than most of her opponents afteriher racing on the other, side. ... '■".' * * ■ '* ' J. <T. Jamieson must have received a shock when Perception was weighted to give Mithra 51bs. at Rosehill. On New Zealand form, Mithra was at least a stone and a-half better than Perception. Compared with othei*s m the race the filly was also favorably treated and showed her appreciation bywinning., . >■'■-.■ #- * * After pottering about the roads for some weeks, Sir Archie has returned to the tracks. His appearance suggests that he is likely to recover form shortly. ■ * # # A two -year- old filly by Tea Tray from Miss Norval, is being educated by A. Julian. She has not been m as long as some of the other youngsters, but is progressing satisfactorily. •#. # # One of the most shapely two-year-olds at Ellerslie is Pure Tea. A fullsister to Royal Tea. Pure Tea is fairly forward and may come quickly. After his . arrival m Sydney some weeks ago, Royal Tea contracted pneumonia. He made a satisfactory recovei'y but has been turned out for a spell so that he may fully, recuperate. # a * Corinax is toiling hard again after several weeks on the easy list. It will take some solid work to get him into proper' racing trim. » , # * There is a dearth of decent handicap horses m this province at present and several trainers are on the look-out for horses of this class for clients. As the season advances, some of the younger Jjrigade may improve and swell the ranks. ' # . # ■ * . ' liittle Modest Boy is looking, very bright and promises to be* fit for the early meetings. With a bit of luck 'he should soon win his way out of hack company. As a result of his two winning, efforts, m June, The Fox is being ticked off to gain further, success this season. He has been toiling usefully and is very healthy. #•• * * . Without being harried, Phaola is doing very ; nicely and should make a lot of progress m the next couple of months. She is still carrying a fair amount of condition. # • . - * ■ * The number of horses m training at Ellerslie at present is probably smaller than it has been at this time of the year for some . seasons. Most trainers are beginning, the season with t small teams. , /# v. #^ « , Bombarder > did not do as w^ll as expected last season, although he raced prominently on several occasions m minor company. It is. probable he will dp better this season as he has come back from a spell looking an improved horse. ■' ' , ' .**': : . #.•.'••■_#, '■■;'■•■ It is more than likely 'Llewellyji will take on the" Waikato Hunt Cup m October. So far, he is standing iip to his work satisfactorily and doing' the necessary hunting to get his certificate. ;- ■ . #". Several Auckland horsemen will be riding at Riccarton. S; Henderson will be on Black Mint, Lady Gay and Beau Cavalier (G.N. Hurdles). R. Wanganui Whispers (From "N.Z. Truth's" Wanganui Rep.) W/ITH the Marton . meeting only four ■ weeks off and Wanganui the following- week, local trainers are-begin-ning to use their clocks, though nothing startling is expected yet. # #, , ' * \ ; ■ R. S. Bagby and H. Telford are sprinting their ' juveniles and both trainers appear to have some good material m hand. "* ••• , ' One that takes the eye is Royal Duke's brother, though he may not be ready until about November. He is not being hurried. ..•■•;•■-.'• ■ ; • • • . ■ . Roman Lake (Sarchee — Lake Uru) will probably be a runner m ' the Debutante Stakes, -and possibly Dresden China (Tea TrayRefinement) will take his place m the field. Both are m good shape, and moving nicely. ■• *.' .'•" : •. ■'' '■' Bagby expects Roseglow. (Absurd — Rose Queen) and the Potoa — Polly Perkins gelding to be forward, enough to race at Wanganui. ' The latter Is a" well-grown youngster, but has rather an ugly action. Still, he promises to be speedy. • . -.. f * •.'■•.. Although the distance of the Debutante Stakes has been reduced to four and a-quarter furlongs, neither. W.Ray ncr nor F. Tilley are likely to start any of their two-year-olds. They are both of opinion that September is too early to ask youngsters to race even half a mile. • # . ft •■ George Curries tw^year-olds are not being hurried, and from present appearances it is probable that Pedestal (the half-brother to Commendation) will not be ready until Christmas time. , ' ■# # • Pedestal is a big, strongly-built sort, very deep-chested and squareshouldered. In the latter respect he .takes after, his sire, and Rayner has hopes that he will prove as good as Thespian, though some consider the gelding' to be too square across to show brilliancy. "■■'." •. * '. * • .*. : ■ ■■■• - ■- Two juveniles . which are being trained at Marton will most likely be seen out at v Wangariui. They are Grand Jury (Grandcourt— Orozino) and T&nt dOr (Tonbridge — Zemenak). The latter is a half-sister to that^good mare, Demure. .# '• ■..' ■ #' ; ■''#■, ' . ...... Frank Lind is going to have his work cut out •to keep Civility going. She is not too sound. * #...#. It would seem safe to predict that Mask will be a better horse this season than he was last, and he was well up among the stake-winners then: George Curries judgment proved correct when he decided to keep Mask' rather than' The Thorn. V M. Gardner has a team of four , m work, including Star Area, .; which has come back after a long spell looking as .fresh as, a three- ■ • year-old. ! - • ■ ' ■■#"■•■ •' '.■ : : War Flame is a shapely-looking filly; and should win a race or two this, season for Murt. • A three-year-old by Potoa— Reherete gives promise of proving a useful sort.
