But They Are Not Always Lucky
<- \ (From "N.Z. Truth's" Dunedin Rep.) When Alfred Charles Daniell, commercial traveller, of Christchurch, deserted his wife m Dun* edin three and a- half years ago, he must have thought the world a charitable institution. IT apparently never entered his head that as the. years rolled by he would have to find the wherewithal from his weekly pay roll to support two families. . But such has been the lot of the knight of the. road, against whom Magistrate Bundle made a maintenance order for the support of his lawfully wedded wife. According to the story of his wife, Mary Daniell, her care free Alfred vanished four summers ago, and he had since written her stating that he was living with a young woman who had borne him four children. He had expressed a desire to have severed the nuptial bond which bound him to his Mary ' some twenty: years ago. : Three children had blessed the union, and from two of the girls, the wife received a sum m the aggregate of 32a. per week , when they were m work. ' This was the only fund she had to draw on for the upkeep of the home except when Alfred sent along spasmodic payments of £2 or £3. Mary asked for £2; a week, but Magistrate Bundle thought that;Daniell would be unable to pay more than . 30s. m the meantime and fixed the order at that amount, separation and guardianship> being included as etceteras.
