Prentice, who is past the seventy mark and still going strong. . . Born m Wellington, he decided at the age of" one year that he would prefer the climate of Wairarapa. He made the trip— accompanied, of course, although even at that age, his pioneer spirit was exerting; itself. Masterton was at that time but a track through dense bush, and the journey over the Rlmutakas was made m a bullock wagon. - In subsequent years, Joseph Prentice took an active part m the affairs of the community. For six years he was a borough' councillor, and for 28 years a director of the Workers' Mutual Benefit Building Society. . In addition he was for several years captain of the Masterton fire brigade, and generally took a keen interest m local matters. ' He was m business as a builder and contractor until he retired some years ago. Of a genial disposition, popular with a.ll classes, he is generally hailed as "Joei" Bowls is his sport, and. he still treads the green. Resident now m Carterton, he continues to look upon Masterton as his home.
