Social Parasite
ITINERANT pedlars of a certain type from time to time come m for some scathing comment. Housewives are naturally wary of encouraging door sales. A recent prosecution m the Wellington Magistrate's Court amply proved that it is not always safe to take a pedlar at his face value. Harold Hardgrave, alias King, was charged with theft from a private dwelling.
Peddling goods from dbop to door, at one house, while the busy wife slipped inside for something, Hardgrave just as promptly, and with bare -faced effrontery, dived into the basement and stole clothes, etc., to the value of £7 odd. Of course, he didn't get away with it. Magistrate Page han.d.ed him out 12 months' imprisonment. Hardgrave was also out on probation from Christchurch and had failed to report. For this offence he was credited with another three months, to be concurrent.
