Wellington's Increased Stakes Will Stimulate Sport (By. "The Toff.") officials of the Wellington Trotting Cliib are to be compliupon the enterprise they are exhibiting m the compilation of their programmes.
•"THEY have the happy knack of hit--1 ting the nail on the head by selecting contests which are fresh and stimulate the sport. In addition to arranging a convenient list of races for its spring meeting, the club has also increased the stakes. The most interesting event on the programme is the New Zealand Cup Trial Handicap, which proved such a big attraction last year. - The stake is to be £400. Last year it was £325. The journey will ten furlongs and is for horses that ; can cut out this distance m -2.45' or faster. . / The next item of importance 'is the Ballard Memorial Handicap of £400, for horses than can tramp two miles m 4.36. Following the pbljcy of 1927, the club has decided to include a mile saddle race.. ■ '
It will be a 2.16 class and the prize will be £300. The improving pacers will have a. 3.34 mile and a-half race, of £150, ' and a 4:47 class worth £200, to be run over two miles. For thenovices, a mile and a-quarter event of £125 will be provided. It is for horses than can. do 3.3, or better. Now for the unhoppled trotters. All told, £475 has been allotte.d. them. The Petone Handicap carries £200. It is for trotters that can- do 3,34 or better one mile and a-half, and the President's Handicap of two miles will have a limit of 4.4.6. The stake is £275. . The meeeting will take place on September 15. .
