FIRST PAYMENT MADE
Fields For The National Treble Reduce Somewhat
The payment that. was made last week for the three big events at the National meeting reduced the fields somewhat.
THE flrst acceptance had the effect of clearing the air, but, even with this, the "market" is dead — there being little doing. Punters, with the meeting nearly two weeks off, are not ready to take risks. And lt will not be till the horses arrive, and start to school and gallop, that there will be a brightening. Thirteen survived the first acceptance for the Steeplechase, the only one of any consequence to go out being Glendowie. Neither Brigadier Bill nor Comical had a chance, and they are better out of the race. The present time favorites are Beau Cavalier and Pouri.- but it will cause no surprise to find the latter advance considerably before long. There is some support for Wiltshire and Pouri, but little for anything else. Greenstone had a run at Timaru on Saturday, but will have to improve a
ton to even be considered a possibility. Notwithstanding the fact that twenty dropped out of the Winter Cup there is still a big field left— thirty-four. - There- is little to add to what was written last week, but horses that are up m the betting are Kaiti and Panther. • ■ ■ ■ - Last year's winner, Solferite, is being mentioned and it will be Interesting tb note how he stood the race at Timaru. Fourteen remain m the Hurdles and once again there was nothing of note m the defections. Both Perle de Leon and Aberfeldy were the worse for wear after Trentham and will have, spells. Red Fuschia, Beau Cavalier and Nukumai are the short ones, and Gaze can also be included under this heading. ' .The Hunt Club meeting is on Saturday week, but it may not throw a great deal of light on the bigger fixture. Still, it will have its interest.
