FROM AMERICA

Was He Correctly Reported^

(Prom "N.Z. Truth's" North Island Rep.) On a world tour, D. Dennehy, president of the Canterbury Owners.' and Breeders' Association, imparted some "information" to a representative of the New York "Herald" while m America. TF his references to the light -harness sport, m New Zealand are accurately reported, then it makes amazing reading. It is surprising to. read that this gentleman of such experience states— or is said to have stated— that the Eng- , lish racehorse plays second fiddle to the American trotter* as harness rac-* ing m New Zealand now surpassed tho orthodox turf sport m the number of tracks, meetings, horses, attendances, prizes and volume of betting. On top of this is. the allegefl statement that, as there is a law, strictly : prohibiting book betting, bootleggers < of the pencillers' profession do not ''']■ flourish and people who wish to play the races must go to the races to do so. \ Certainly, there is a law, but .: Dennehy forgot to state that it is honored more m the breach than « m the observance — and that book- i makers are as plentiful as daisies m spring. ■ > . ! Then, again, his references to the* ; work done, by the association, where b they tell managers of courses what .4. should' be done and what should not be :.U done m administering the rules,. is not S correct. I:i r Not the way it reads, where the im- -: T pressiqn is gathered that the Canter- .; bury body dictates to those who hold ■ the reins of power. • ' - i- J; It is a recognized fact that American Aj journalists frequently misconstrue | statements made, and, m this instance, | it may be the same, for the whole re- £ port is unsavory. ..'..».. • .'■% "N.Z. Truth" -fully recognizes the % good work done by the Canterbury > Owners' and Trainers' Association, but ';■ is game to state that if Dennehy made ;; these remarks— and fully believes them ■• to be correct— then he must have been ; a seasick passenger on his trip across the briny. :
